    Grade 3 PREP

    The Church
    This year you will learn a lot about the Church, the community of all baptized who believe in God and follow Jesus Christ. You’ll get a deeper understanding of what it means to belong to the Catholic Church. You will explore how the Church is the Body of Christ whose various members work together to share the Good News of Jesus and give thanks through worship and prayer.

     April- Unit 7 Kingdom of God
    Chapter 19 "The Church through Time"
    This chapter examines the covenant between Abraham and God and recalls that, through Jesus, the Church continues to be a sign of God’s everlasting covenant.

    Chapter 20 "The Work of the Church"
    This chapter recalls that all members of the Church share in her mission to work for peace and justice and Jesus’ instructions to his disciples to share the Good News.

    Chapter 21 "Everlasting Life"
    This chapter identifies the Last Judgement as God’s final triumph over evil, when Christ will come again and bring the Kingdom of God to its fullness.




    March- Unit 6 Sacraments
    Chapter 16 “Sacraments of Initiation”
    This chapter discusses the words and actions of the Sacraments of Initiation which celebrate membership into the Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

    Chapter 17 “Sacraments of Healing”
    This chapter describes the words and actions of the Sacraments of Healing: Penance and Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick.

    Chapter 18 “Sacraments at the Service of Communion”
    This chapter explores serving God and the community through the Sacraments at the Service of Communion: Holy Orders and Matrimony.

    February- Unit 5 Morality
    Chapter 13 “Choose Love”
    This chapter describes the need to seek God’s mercy and to ask for and offer forgiveness. It also focuses on Jesus’ teaching to love others, especially our enemies.

    Chapter 14 “Live in the Light”
    This chapter explores the importance of sharing Christ’ light with others and the Theological Virtues of faith, hope, and charity (love).

    Chapter 15 “Help with Choices”
    This chapter explains how grace, conscience, and the Precepts of the Church help us follow God and make good choices.

    January- Unit 4 The Church
    Chapter 10 "Church Leaders"
    This chapter explains how the Pope, bishops, and pastors lead and guide the Church and describes the Pope and bishops as successors of the Apostles.

    Chapter 11 "One and Holy"
    This chapter explains how the Holy Spirit continues to unify the Church and make her holy. One and holy are two Marks of the Church.

    Chapter 12 "Catholic and Apostolic"
    This chapter covers the Marks of the Church: Catholic and Apostolic. The Church’s mission is to share Jesus’ Good News with the people of all nations.

    ​December- Unit 3 Jesus Christ

    Chapter 7 "The Good News"

    This chapter explains the Good News that God the Father loves his People and saves them from the power of sin and everlasting death. It also explains that the Gospels in the New Testament tell the stories of Jesus’ life and teachings, parables, and miracles.

    Chapter 8 "The Paschal Mystery"
    This chapter explains that Jesus sacrificed his life to save us and examines how the Church celebrates the Paschal Mystery in each of the Seven Sacraments.

    Chapter 9 "The Body of Christ"
    This chapter explains that all baptized Catholics are members of the Body of Christ and examines how people use their gifts and talents to serve God and others.

    November- Unit 2 Trinity
    Chapter 4 "The Holy Trinity"
    This chapter examines the mystery of the Holy Trinity and the relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

    Chapter 5 "The Church Celebrates"
    This chapter explains how we worship as Catholics and the special place of the Eucharist among the Seven Sacraments.

    Chapter 6 "Pray Always"
    This chapter describes prayer as talking and listening to God and the ways Jesus taught us to pray, including the Lord’s Prayer.
    ​It identifies the various ways we pray.



    October- Unit 1 Revelation
    Chapter 1 "The Creator's Work" 

    This chapter explains how the Holy Trinity- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit- worked as one to create the world.

    Chapter 2 "The Church Gathered"
    This chapter explains how the Church community works together to act in Jesus’ name.

    Chapter 3 "Families Teach Love"
    This chapter explores Mary as a model for family living and how families show love and respect and the role of the family as the domestic Church.
