    Grade 5 PREP

    The Seven Sacraments
    During this year, you will be looking closely at the Church's special signs and celebrations known as the Seven Sacraments. The Sacraments point to God and to his love. Christ himself acts in the Sacraments, and they become sources of grace and new life. You'll grow in your understanding of the Son of God, who was sent to bring salvation and new life. You'll learn about the Church's role in salvation and the Holy Spirit who unites the Church in Jesus. And, you'll explore how the Sacraments are celebrated and the ways the grace of the Sacraments deepen your relationship with Christ and strengthen you to follow him.

    April- Unit 7 Kingdom of God
    Chapter 19 "The Call to Serve"
    This chapter identifies vocation as the particular way we respond to God’s call to serve him and others and examines consecrated religious life and the Sacraments at the Service of Communion.

    Chapter 20 "The Last Things"
    This chapter explains Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, describes the Mass of Christian Burial, and identifies how we prepare for eternal life by serving God and one another right now.

    Chapter 21 "Bring the Good News"
    This chapter explains Isaiah’s proclamation of God’s Kingdom, identifies the Works of Mercy, and describes evangelization as sharing the Good News of Jesus.


    March- Unit 6 Sacraments

    Chapter 16 "Gathered as One" 
    This chapter explains that the Mass is central to Catholic life because it unites Christ’s followers more closely to him and to one another, including those who have died in God’s friendship.

    Chapter 17 “Liturgy of the Word”
    This chapter describes the elements of the Liturgy of the Word and the need to reflect on Scripture, and identifies Sacred Tradition as the message of Jesus that comes from the Apostles and the life of the Church.

    Chapter 18 “Liturgy of the Eucharist”
    This chapter explains the significance of the bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of Christ, expressing the Mass as a holy meal and a sacrifice.

    February- Unit 5 Morality
    Chapter 13 “Evil in the World”

    This chapter describes Jesus’ Death and Resurrection as God’s plan for redemption, and examines the relationship between sin and the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.

    Chapter 14 “New Life in Christ”
    This chapter identifies the Sacraments of Initiation and the steps of the RCIA process, and explains that through the Seven Sacraments God shares his divine life.

    Chapter 15 “Forgiveness and Healing”
    This chapter defines contrition and absolution and identifies the Sacraments of Healing as Christ’s actions through the Church to share God’s healing and forgiveness.

    January- Unit 4 The Church
    Chapter 10 "The Church’s Message"
    This chapter identifies the Marks of the Church, describes the characteristics of unit, and examines the Holy Spirit’s movement and presence the Church and her mission.


    Chapter 11 "The Teaching Church"
    This chapter describes the Magisterium as the teaching office of the Church, explains apostolic succession, and defines dogma as teachings revealed by Christ and taught by the Church.


    Chapter 12 "Lives of Holiness"
    This chapter identifies the Holy Spirit as sanctifier, describes personal holiness and canonization, and presents key teachings about Mary, the Mother of God and the greatest of Saints, and how we honor her.

    December- Unit 3 Jesus Christ

    Chapter 7 "Living Image of Christ"
    This chapter recognizes Jesus as the fullness of God’s Revelation and explores ways in which humans reflect the image of God.

    Chapter 8 "Proclaim the Kingdom"

    This chapter identifies the Kingdom of God as present now and yet to come and describes Jesus’ proclamation in his teaching, signs and wonders.

    Chapter 9 "Celebrating the Paschal Mystery"
    ​
    This chapter describes the Paschal Mystery and explains how each of the Seven Sacraments celebrates
    Christ’s work of redemption and new life.



    November- Unit 2 Trinity
    Chapter 4 "The Mystery of the Trinity"

    This chapter addresses the mystery of the Holy Trinity- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit- and defines faith, hope and charity as the Theological Virtues.

    Chapter 5 "Prayer and Worship"
    This chapter defines liturgy, examines worship as a natural response to God’s loving goodness, and identifies the ways in which the Holy Trinity is at work in the Mass.

    Chapter 6 "A Life of Virtue"
    This chapter explains the Great Commandment and Cardinal Virtues and their role in a person’s decision-making process.



    October- Unit 1 Revelation
    Chapter 1 "God’s Plan for All Creation" 
    This chapter examines Divine Revelation, God’s providence, and the role humans play in stewardship of God’s Creation.

    Chapter 2 "God is Faithful"
    This chapter explores our deepest longing, explains grace as participation in the life of the Holy Trinity, and examines faith as the free, loving gift of God’s own life and help.

    Chapter 3 "Signs of God's Presence"
    This chapter describes how God uses signs to communicate with us, and explains the Seven Sacraments as effective signs of God’s life, given by Christ to the Church.

    Sunday: 7am, 8am, 10am * & Noon
